India sees drop in women tourists After Nirbhaya Case

The growth in women tourist arrivals dropped from 11.6% in 2013 to 9.7% in 2014 in India.

The number of women tourists visiting India​ has taken a dip, according to data by the Tourism Ministry. The Nirbhaya gangrape in 2012 had brought international outrage and wide attention to the issue of safety of women in India.

According to a report in a leading daily, the growth in women tourist arrivals dropped from 11.6% in 2013 to 9.7% in 2014. The Tourism Ministry revealed that in 2012, 25 lakh women tourists paid a visit to India. It saw an increase of 11.6% in 2013 with the number going up to over 28 lakh. But in 2014, 31,44,762 women tourists arrived in India. This is an increase of 9.7%, but a dip of 2% from previous years.

The National Crime Records Bureau said, in 2014, 384 cases of crime against women tourists from abroad were registered. In the break up of data, most number of cases were registered in Delhi, Goa, and Uttar Pradesh, reports the daily.

To curb these offences against women, Tourism Ministry has implemented a few measures. They now have a 24-hour multi-lingual helpline which is available in Arabic, French, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish among 10 other choices.

Amitabh Bachchan National Anthem Case

Amitabh Bachchan made a lot of headlines when he sang the National Anthem at Eden Gardens in Kolkata before India and Pakistan's cricket match in the T20 Cricket World Cup. However, this got the superstar into legal trouble as a complaint was filed against him at New Ashok Nagar Police Station, New Delhi for allegedly singing the anthem incorrectly. The complaint stated that Big B took 1 min 22 seconds to sing the anthem as against the 52 seconds prescribed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Model and actor Arjun Mathur has now come out in support of Amitabh and has bashed the complainant Ulhas PR on his Facebook account. In fact, he is furious with the complainant to an extent that he has suggested him being given a "10-finger slap." Arjun wrote, "Did anyone else know that according to 'rules laid down by the MHA' the length of the national anthem should be no more than 52 seconds? I've DEFINITELY, forcibly been made to stand for a far longer duration before movies in Jai Maharashtra. Mr. Bachchan apparently crossed the 'length limit' by an unimaginable 22 seconds. Complainant needs a 10-finger slap as opposed to the normally prescribed 5."
